Dover-Foxcroft – On Monday, September 30th, the dream of an indoor ice facility became a reality as the Libra Foundation and Foxcroft Academy held the grand opening ceremony for the Piscataquis County Ice Arena.  Over 200 people were in attendance to witness a ceremony that included Maine Governor Janet Mills and former Boston Bruins star and NHL Hall of Famer Ray Bourque.

“This is a big day for Dover-Foxcroft, Piscataquis County, and all of the great people that live here,” said Craig Denekas, President and CEO of the Libra Foundation.  “We see this building being a destination spot for those that love ice sports. Whether it’s hockey, figure skating, broomball, curling, or anything else on ice, this state of the art facility is willing and able to host it.”

The $5.5 million structure took fifteen months to finish.  It includes a full sheet of ice for skating, hockey, and other ice-related sports and activities.  The facility also has six locker rooms, office space, seating for 250-300 fans, a concession area, a meeting space, and a pro shop.

“We have been working non-stop for the last few weeks putting final touches on the building,” said Andrew Jacobs, Director of the PCIA.  “Our contractors and workers put in a lot of time because they knew this project is a big one for the community. Now we have a few smaller things to finish up, including getting the ice down, but that process will be completed in the coming weeks.”

Now that PCIA is completed, Foxcroft Academy will assume managing the day to day operations of the facility.  “We are ready for this and we are extremely excited to have the PCIA in our backyard,” said Arnold Shorey, FA Head of School. “We are ready to manage the operations of PCIA for the benefit of the Piscataquis County Region as this is a tremendous opportunity.”

Foxcroft Academy plans to hold its first event at the PCIA on Saturday, October 19th, as part of the 2019 FA Homecoming celebration.  The Foxcroft Academy Alumni Hockey game will be the first official game on the new ice surface.

Over the following weeks and months, plans will be put in place for the return of high school hockey to Piscataquis County.

“The plan is to bring high school hockey back to the region by establishing a co-op hockey team consisting of students from Penquis High School, Piscataquis Community High School, Greenville High School, and Foxcroft Academy,” said Shorey.  “It is my belief that the team can be a microcosm for the whole region as the four schools will need to work together. It will require that the students work hard, develop teamwork and be dedicated, not to a particular school, but to the region, just like the name on the building.”
