What are the admissions requirements for Foxcroft Academy?

Foxcroft Academy accepts students who have demonstrated a great desire for learning and whose academic records indicate that they are capable of maintaining a solid “B” average in an intense and rigorous college preparatory curriculum. We strongly believe that education extends beyond the classroom and therefore want to accept students who are focused on academics yet also believe in experiential education through co-curricular activities and clubs. All applicants must have a phone or in-person interview with an admissions counselor.

Do I need to come to Foxcroft for an on-campus visit prior to be admitted?

No. However, we strongly suggest that students make a visit to our campus and schedule an interview with the Admissions Director if at all possible. An interview by SKYPE is required for students who cannot visit the campus.

Does Foxcroft Academy award financial aid/scholarships?

Yes. All financial aid is need-based only due to regulations imposed by the Maine Principals Association (MPA). Parents must complete the Financial Aid Application and submit the completed form before financial aid packages can be determined.

How large are the classes?

The average class size at Foxcroft is 16 students.

How much homework will I get at Foxcroft?

Foxcroft students typically have about 20 hours of work per week outside of class. As a general rule, expect 45 minutes of homework per night for each class.

How many academic classes do students take?

Students must take a minimum of four core academic courses per semester. The Academy has two semesters, a fall semester that lasts from August to January and a spring semester that lasts from January to June.

How many AP or Honors courses are offered?

Foxcroft Academy offers 21 AP courses and 32 Honors courses. Guidance counselors, the Assistant Head of School for Academics, and faculty members review all course sign-ups in order to make sure students are placed appropriately.

What kind of university can I get into as a Foxcroft Academy graduate?

Since Head of School Arnold Shorey came aboard in 2010, Foxcroft Academy has been a school on the move. Over the course of the past four years, the Academy has become the first high school in Maine to implement a 1-to-1 iPad initiative, has added a second beautiful dorm on campus, and has enhanced its curriculum by giving its talented and creative faculty the freedom to develop a variety of new academic offerings. Universities around the nation have taken notice that FA is a school on the rise, and the list of college acceptances for students from the past three graduating classes reflects this.

Are students allowed to take more than one language?

Yes. Foxcroft Academy offers Latin, Spanish, Chinese, French, and ESL.

What kinds of international travel opportunities are available?

The Foxcroft Academy International Club sponsors at least one trip abroad each year, and these trips are available to all students. Recent travel destinations include France, Spain, Greece, England, Italy, and Costa Rica. Scholarships are available for these trips.

What can I do if I am having trouble in a class?

Foxcroft has an outstanding network of support for students who are struggling academically. Academic Support Periods are scheduled at the beginning and ending of each day. Students who have an academic standing of a B-  and below or who are not meeting the academic standards required for a given course are placed in an Academic Support Period until their grade has improved. Faculty members are also available before and after the school day for extra help. In addition, Foxcroft has a peer tutoring program in which students requesting help are matched with volunteer tutors. ESL instruction is also provided to all international students as a regular part of the curriculum. Structured study sessions are also provided on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the Jim Brown English Wing.

With whom will I be living?

Foxcroft Academy features two state-of-the-art, on-campus dormitories. Herd Hall, which opened in 2009, houses 60 boarding students and six faculty families. The Lodge, which was completed in August 2012, houses 36 students and four faculty families.  Students share a room with one other student.  The two dormitories each have both a male and female wing as well as a large common area, kitchen facilities, a fireplace, and wireless internet.

The Academy also has two smaller Honors Dorms across the street. These dorms house a total of 14 students.

Do I need to live with a roommate?

Most dorm rooms are doubles, but the Honors Dorm, which is only available to returning students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, does provide students with a single room. Student proctors in the on-campus dorms also have single rooms.

What is provided with the room?

All rooms are furnished with a bed, chair, desk, bureau, large closet, and safe.

How do I handle my laundry?

Washers and dryers are available on site in the dorms and are free to use. The payment for laundry use is incorporated into the student life fees. Laundry service equipment is provided by MacGray Laundry services.

Are there curfews or quiet study times?

On school nights, quiet hours are enforced at the dorms after 7:00 pm. Study sessions in the dorms are from 7-9 pm, Sunday through Thursday nights.
