The 2019 Foxcroft Academy Co-Ed Basketball camp was recently held in Dover-Foxcroft at the Piscataquis Regional YMCA (PRYMCA), directed by FA Boys Varsity Basketball coach Tyler Erickson. Also helping were FA students and basketball players Karis Dankert, Meghan Spooner, and Emily McLeish for the younger group, and Sam Harmon Weeks and Jediah Dean for the older group. Grades 3-5 practiced in the morning starting at 8 am, while grades 6-8 practiced in the afternoon.
The younger campers were lucky to have the ability to enjoy the nice weather throughout the week at the PRYMCA outdoor courts. However, since the afternoons were overly hot, the older campers stayed inside and played in the indoor courts at FA and Sedomocha Middle School.
Erickson said that although there were some new kids in the younger group, the majority of the campers returned from last summer. This allowed him to observe how much their abilities had improved over a year, as well as over the week. “They have come a long way with ball handling,” said Erickson of both the older and younger groups. Ball handling is something Erickson highlights at the camp–among other skill sets–through different drills and practices. However, Erickson noticed a considerable difference between the two groups of campers.
The younger group had a “good energy” throughout the week, said Erickson, while the older group had a “great intensity and battled each other well.” Senior Jediah Dean noted that the older campers were doing “a lot of drills that they’d see in high school, which is good.” This would help to prepare them for when they make the switch from middle school to high school sports.
Overall, the week of basketball was a successful one. Out of the three basketball camps he had been to so far this summer, young camper Aidan Sicker said, “it was my favorite camp.” Sicker enjoyed it because it helped him improve his skills, as his dream is to make it to the NBA. Though, one of the most important parts, said Sicker, was that he was having fun.
